Know Your Island Walks- Ihiya Preserve
Join the Trails Committee for group hikes on San Juan Island on the last Saturday of each month at 10am. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and sturdy walking shoes. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
All registratnts will meet at Red Mill Farm at 290 Valley Farms Road at 10am. They will then carpool to the Ihiya Biological Preserve, 140 Kiehl Road. This 32-acre preserve, now owned and managed by the San Juan Preservation Trust, was originally purchased and conserved by a dedicated group of neighbors who formed a non-profit and later entered into a conservation easement with the San Juan County Conservation Land Bank. We will be led by Ben Hallowell, the SJPT Land Steward responsible for caring for the preserve, as we explore the short trail system and diverse natural communities ranging from streams and meadows to upland forests and interior herbaceous balds, identifying what plant and wildlife species we can along the way. Since its protection, Ihiya has been a place for education, connection, and collaboration amongst neighbors, volunteers, land conservation organizations, conservation corps, and many more groups in the future.
Distance: 1 mile
Rating: Moderate, some steep and bumpy terrain.
Parking is extremely limited.
Everyone attending will meet at Red Mill Farm and carpool to Ihiya Preserve.
